![]() ![]() Our goal is to support both Prolog systems in a single codebase – we are not planning to drop support for SICStus Prolog, but we also do not want to maintain separate branches for the two systems. Reference Wielemaker, Schrijvers, Triska and Lager2012). ![]() Recently, we have begun refactoring the ProB codebase to make it compatible with more than just SICStus Prolog, with a specific focus on supporting SWI-Prolog (Wielemaker et al. As a result, the ProB codebase makes heavy use of SICStus-specific features and libraries, and compatibility with other Prolog systems was generally not considered in its past development. It has been in continuous development since the early 2000s, based entirely on the SICStus Prolog system (Carlsson and Mildner Reference Carlsson and Mildner2012). The application in question, ProB, is an animator, constraint solver, and model checker for formal specifications of safety-critical systems. ![]() Developers may also make the conscious choice to only support a single system, in order to reduce development effort or to make full use of a specific system’s unique features.Īs a case study, this paper examines the process of refactoring a large nonportable Prolog application to make it compatible with other Prolog systems. As Prolog applications are often only tested on the Prolog system for which they were originally developed, it is easy to accidentally rely on features and behavior not supported by other systems. Most nontrivial Prolog code thus requires non-ISO features provided by individual systems. ![]() The ISO standard core language alone is insufficient for many programs, as it does not provide important features like a module system, constraint programming, or even simple standard libraries like library(lists). This situation complicates writing Prolog code that can be run on multiple different Prolog systems. Some features are entirely specific to one system and not supported by other systems at all (Körner et al. For many other features, no clear standard has emerged though, with different systems often supporting the same feature with different interfaces. Some of these nonstandard features have established themselves as de facto standards that are widely and consistently implemented across many modern Prolog systems. Furthermore, as this standard only specifies the core of the Prolog language, it does not cover the libraries and advanced language features of modern full-featured Prolog systems. To establish a common basic definition of Prolog, the core of the language was formalized in an ISO standard (ISO/IEC 13211-1:1995 1995), which is followed by the vast majority of Prolog implementations nowadays – although some intentionally deviate from the standard in small or large ways. Each of these implementations supports a different feature set than all others, often introducing new extensions to the language and libraries while changing or removing other features. New implementations of Prolog were (and still are) created regularly, either derived from other existing implementations or developed completely from scratch. We also describe notable compatibility issues and other differences that we encountered in the process, and how we were able to deal with them with few major code changes.įor most of its existence, the Prolog programming language has been continuously developed and extended by different groups, often in parallel and somewhat independently from one another. This required a multitude of adjustments, ranging from extending the SICStus emulation in SWI-Prolog on to better modularizing the monolithic ProB codebase. The article describes how we managed to refactor the codebase of ProB to also support SWI-Prolog, with the goal of verifying ProB’s results using two independent toolchains. We examine one such Prolog application: ProB, which has been developed for over 20 years in SICStus Prolog. Most Prolog applications thus have to rely on nonstandard features, often making them dependent on one particular Prolog implementation and incompatible with others. Indeed, implementations sometimes deviate from the ISO standard and the standard itself fails to cover many features that are essential in practice. Even though the core of the Prolog programming language has been standardized by ISO since 1995, it remains difficult to write complex Prolog programs that can run unmodified on multiple Prolog implementations. ![]()

![]() That assumes, of course, that a player is willing to subject themselves to a second playthrough anytime soon. You might be wandering aimlessly around the environment for a long time on your first run, or you might be having to scoot back and forth to trigger the next step in the chain on a subsequent playthrough. Compounding this frustration is the fact certain dialog segments don’t trigger until you cross a specific threshold at a certain time. Worse, there are items which a player might suspect exist given the dialogue, but never turn up. But there are some items which a player’s meta-knowledge of adventure games would suggest they try to pick up, and the inability to do so can be frustrating at times. Some objects have descriptions of what they are, generally obvious but occasionally snarky as a nod to Nicole’s point-of-view. Rachel Foster uses a very obvious fixed cursor. This wouldn’t be quite so bad if you didn’t know they were potentially accessible in the first place. ![]() Certain items do not become active until you reach a particular point in the story. Nicole’s mother Claire, however, doesn’t get as much visual exposure.įirst off, the mechanics are badly simplified. Another oversight seems to be a duplication to certain textures for items such as audio cassettes and VHS tapes.Īside from that, we’re treated to some decent “environmental storytelling” through the various books and objects which Nicole can pick up and examine, giving us a better idea about Leonard McGrath, Rachel’s father, as well as Nicole’s life before leaving. Under other circumstances, it would be understandable, but it feels like an oversight in this case something the developers didn’t think about or properly consider. It is a little jarring, though, that we never get an opportunity to see Nicole in any of the mirrors. ![]() A number of items had knockoff labels of actual products which look correct for the time period, a fine detail which adds a note of verisimilitude to the experience. There was a little texture cracking in some spots, but overall, the environment was neatly put together. The game is set in the mid-1990s, but the decor of the Timberline seems to date back to the early 1960s, and the developers should feel proud they managed to split the difference so deftly. You won’t be leaving.”įrom a visual perspective, the Unreal engine is well used in The Suicide of Rachel Foster, helping to create a good atmosphere, as well as creating the “frozen in time” feel of the Timberline Lodge, the resort where Nicole spends her entire time. A posthumous letter from Nicole’s mother directs her to visit the resort in preparation to sell it, and Nicole dutifully drives to the mountains of Montana to start the inspection. From what we learn through playing the game, Rachel disappeared and was found weeks later from an apparent suicide. ![]() Nicole hasn’t seen her father in over a decade after leaving the lodge abruptly right after Christmas, in the wake of his affair with Nicole’s friend, the titular Rachel Foster, being revealed. Players assume the role of Nicole Wilson, a young woman who has just inherited a ski resort from her recently deceased father. Unfortunately, The Suicide of Rachel Foster doesn’t get it right. When done right, these games involve the player in a way that bridges the gap between video game and gripping dramatic cinema. Games like The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and What Remains of Edith Finch have established the conceit of a limited environment where players move about and solve simple puzzles in furtherance of the story. ![]() ![]() Abdul Habib, 32, a former ANA soldier who lost friends in the Kunduz attack, blamed access to biometric data for their deaths. Regardless, some locals are convinced that the collection of their biometric information has put them in danger. It’s unclear what kinds of devices these were, or whether they were the same ones used by American forces to help establish “identity dominance”-the Pentagon’s goal of knowing who people were and what they had done. Witnesses told local police at the time that the Taliban used some kind of fingerprint scanner to check people’s identities. In one widely reported incident from that year, insurgents ambushed a bus en route to Kunduz and took 200 passengers hostage, eventually killing 12, including local Afghan National Army soldiers returning to their base after visiting family. The Office of the Secretary of Defense referred questions about this information to United States Central Command, which did not respond to a request for comment on what they should do with such data.Īn investigation by Amnesty International found that the Taliban tortured and massacred nine ethnic Hazara men after capturing Ghazni province in early July, while in Kabul there have been numerous reports of Taliban going door to door to “register” individuals who had worked for the government or internationally funded projects.īiometrics have played a role in such activity going back to at least 2016, according to local media accounts. The police ID application form, for example, also appears to ask for recruits’ favorite fruit and vegetable. The information is also of deep military value-whether for the Americans who helped construct it or for the Taliban, both of which are “looking for networks” of their opponent’s supporters, says Annie Jacobsen, a journalist and author of First Platoon: A Story of Modern War in the Age of Identity Dominance.īut not all the data has such clear use. He calls it a sort of “genealogy” of “community connections” that is “putting all of these people at risk.” One of the forms for police recruitment alone captured 36 pieces of information, including data on applicants and their families that included details such as "favorite fruit” and “favorite vegetable.” This turns what was a simple digital catalogue into something far more dangerous, according to Ranjit Singh, a postdoctoral scholar at the nonprofit research group Data & Society who studies data infrastructures and public policy. ![]() But it also contains details on the individuals’ military specialty and career trajectory, as well as sensitive relational data such as the names of their father, uncles, and grandfathers, as well as the names of the two tribal elders per recruit who served as guarantors for their enlistment. ![]() ![]() ![]() Use their Getting Started Guide to pick the topic you want to tackle first and start making healthy changes! ![]() You’ll receive an email with a login to their online access portal, where you’ll begin downloading your eBooks, signing up for your eCourses, and redeeming your free bonus offers.
